Doing it for Monday Night Football was easy. After all, almost everyone was at work just a few hours before the game. But how big a pain will it be to turn on all those lights in all those skyscrapers in uptown Charlotte on Saturday night?
Not much, as it turns out.
"Most of these buildings have security guards who can go through and make sure the lights are on," said Moira Quinn of Charlotte Center City Partners, which is helping coordinate the effort. "Also, most of them have computers, and they computerize the lighting."
Yes, the uptown crowd plans to light up the skyline once again for the latest primetime Panthers game. Besides giving fans headed to the stadium a reason to oooh and ahhh, glittering towers play well on TV, they say.
Center City Partners has spent the past few days reminding companies and building owners to leave lights on Saturday, especially in windows facing west, toward the stadium. Most plan to do it, Quinn said, and those who can also will light the tops of towers in Panther blue.
"It should not be a problem," she said. "Everybody has jumped right in."
I remember when BoA spelled out NFL, that was awesome.
ReplyDeleteIs that a paw on the side of the BOA tower there? I've never noticed that before - awesome! Downtown Charlotte is beautiful, you all should be proud.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it's great, but certainly ironic that the very same people who preach to save the environment and go green now shill for the skyline appeal
ReplyDeleteSorry to be the Baby Ruth in the punchbowl, but what is the point of this, exactly? People see the lights on TV and think, what? Oooow, pretty let's move to Charlotte? That Charlotte literally has money to burn? That the city of Charlotte has nothing better to do than fund a non-profit to run around and do such things?
ReplyDeleteJust seems like more of the QC's chronic insecurity shining thru.
JAT
Aw, lighten up previous poster. I and a lot of other fans like to see Charlotte lit up purty at night, especially giving Charlotte a favorable impression on national tv. I love it and think it's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteCome on guys, it's all about having a little pride in the city. It's just a classy thing to put out the welcome mat for newcomers. Anytime we have visitors come by at night, we always turn on the lights for them. Don't you? Honestly if you can't think of anything more important to be upset about, then you lead a very pitiful life. So if you're going to take it seriously, then take it somewhere else. This is a party. And we're turning the lights on and gonna whoop and holler and dance in the streets.
ReplyDeleteJAT,
ReplyDeleteThat's the same thing other cities do; they ask businesses to light up their buildings when their city skyline will be on national TV. NY does it too when they make the Empire State Bldg. change colors. Its not like the networks won't film the city. Might as well make it look nice. That's like someone going on national TV and not combing their hair, LOL.
Did anyone see Three Wachovia Center last night? Looks like they beat everyone to the punch!!
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy seeing the buildings in Panther's blue. It would be awesome if the Wachovia Center (the big, white building next to Three Wachovia) could be lit up in blue as well!
ReplyDeleteYeah, take some pride! Go Panthers!! However(just a thought) What if the city was dim lit as a effort to conserve energy? That would show the whole country that Charlotte is a major city that is concerned about the environment and the economy. We could set an example for the rest of the country. Keep BOA lit like a torch...the rest completely dark. Or, waste some more and layoff 5,000 people in an effort to save money.
ReplyDeleteGeez! It's called showing pride people. PRIDE...it's not a dirty word as some would have us believe. Get over yourselves it's 2 or three nights out of 365, it's not gonna cause the planet to burst into flames.
ReplyDeletePantherCanada, I'm with you, I never noticed the pawprint on the side of the building.

Go Panthers! Send those birds back to Saint Louie...

ReplyDeleteThat building hasn't been affiliated with Wachovia for a long time. It's called "400 South Tryon" now.
um. the birds are from arizona. but whatever. just beat them.
ReplyDeleteGo Panthers! (Delo!!!!!!) Just a note: No such thing as "Wachovia" anymore. How about "Wells Fargo & Co." which, incidently, has quite a work force in Arizona. Get em, boyz!!!
ReplyDeleteYa'll are nerds lets just beat em! ;-)
ReplyDeleteSCREW the environment! What a bunch of dang sheeple...buying into this global warming man-made climate change heresy. You guys all must be descendants of the same people that said the world was flat, too. SHEESH!
ReplyDelete"Sheeple" is the coolest new word I've heard in quite a while! Thanks dude!!!
ReplyDeleteTicket holders for tomorrow's game - do NOT be Sheeple! Drown out Kurt Warner's calls!!
ReplyDeleteIt is nice for the aesthetic appeal. Nice for the sense of community. I just think that they should all program their automated light systems to put their stock values up once a quarter for the game Saturday...heck, maybe every day...advertise that...

ReplyDeleteThe Birds used to be in St. Louis, before ownership got run out of town, a la George Shinn. Before that they were in Chicago.
As a stockholder of Bank of America that has recently cut my dividend I receive from them (and, more importnatly in the scheme of things, cut workers), let's see this big bank with the big problems save some money! Cut the lights OFF, Ken Lewis!!!
