A different kind of aerial battle

Among the Carolina-Arizona connections that we'll explore this week, one of the most obvious is US Airways, which is based near Phoenix and is Charlotte's dominant carrier. Tomorrow's print edition will have more on the US Airways link, but here's another aspect that could result in some fun -- or tension, depending on the growing trash talk.

Going back to its America West days, US Airways has a habit of painting planes with the logos and colors of pro teams in its hub cities. With the NFL, the Arizona Cardinals were the first team honored, and in 2007 the airline unveiled a Carolina Panthers plane decked out in blue, black and silver at the Charlotte airport.

Here's the thing, though: Neither plane is tethered to the team's hometown airport. Each Airbus -- which carries about 120 passengers -- flies as part of US Airways' regular domestic fleet. As an airline spokesman said when the Panthers plane was being done, "It goes wherever it needs to go."

So you're just as likely to see the Cardinals plane sitting at the Charlotte airport as the Panthers plane. I know I have, and I'll be curious to see if the Cards jet touches down anytime this week before Saturday's big game.

US Airways spokeswoman Michelle Mohr said she's checking if the Panthers and Cardinals planes will be re-routed to take advantage of Saturday's game. In general, she said, "we certainly try to route them into cities. "

And get this: The fun could continue next week if the Panthers win. US Airways also has planes painted with the logos and colors of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers -- both of which are still alive in the playoffs.

"Coincidence?" Mohr said. "I think not."

  1. I would do anything to fly on that Panthers Airplane. I wonder if the flight attendants are Cheerleaders??? :-)

  2. I flew the Panthers airplane to Freeport, Bahamas last February. There is nothing special other than the paint job.

  4. This makes sense. I saw a Steelers plane landing in Charlotte about a month ago. It was on a Tuesday and I was wrecking my brain trying to figure out what the Steelers were doing in Charlotte on a Tuesday...doah!!

  5. I had a chance to fly it to D.C. last February, but it had a technical problem, and they took it to the hangar and switched it out for another A319. I was that close.

  6. Is the red on the Cardinal's airplane the same color as the red ink on their balance sheet?

I've flown a **LOT**. TOO much for one person's lifetime, I feel. And of the top 10 INTERNATIONAL flights I've made - both pre and post 9-11 - I'd have to say all but 1 or 2 have been on USAir / USAirways. Domestically, Delta ain't bad but I'd take USAirways over 'em - as well as anything from AA, UA and the other busses-with-wings.

Thank YOU, USAirways. The goin' hasn't always been easy but you've helped make it better.

BTW, NO First Class flights for me - and the "biz class" stopped late in 1989 - so my experiences are with the rest of y'all in coach. Few complaints - none worth even mentioning ...

  10. If this is front-page news, I now understand why the Charlotte Observer, a once-proud paper with a thunderous editorial voice, is slowly going down the tubes.

  11. I'm sure the person above that said "Same poor service no matter what the outside looks like ..." only flys once, maybe twice a year. I fly USair 3-4 times a week for the last 5 years and have never had a problem...other than weather. Its always the people who never fly that complain ALL the time. If you don't like it, fly with another airline. If you fly Delta, good luck in Atlanta...if you fly AA, good luck in Dallas and if you fly United, good luck in Chicago. All airlines have the same issues...so get over it, stay off the planes and please drive so you don't have to waste our time by taking up space in airports.

  12. there are no perfect airlines...just like there
are no perfect airplane manufacturers...all machines break down...period.
So all you negy people who choose to talk about USAir...pick another topic please and take your negy self somewhere else.

Do you have any idea what kind of money it takes to create and maintain a custom paint job like that?

  13. It just seems like USair inherited Eastern Airlines "you're just a know nothing passenger" attitude.
